A little bit about Me

I was raised in Salt Lake City and am a proud graduate of both Highland High School and the University of Utah. My passion for public service started in high school as the President of Young Democrats at Highland. In college, I studied Political Science and served as a Hinckley intern in Washington DC. After completing my undergraduate studies, I obtained a law degree from the University of Michigan Law School.

In 1996, after I completed law school I moved back to Utah and I accepted a job with the law firm Jones Waldo, where I focused my practice on business litigation and eventually became a partner in 2003. In 2006, I accepted a position with Zions Bank working with local governments specifically; cities, counties, school districts and special districts until 2016.

In 2004, I ran successfully for the Utah House of Representatives. In 2006, when a vacancy in my Senate district became available, I ran for the State Senate and was successful. I was re-elected in 2010. During my legislative years, I was proud to be a champion for education, the environment, equality, and good government. My commitment to these values was reflected in 100% scores from various groups, including the Sierra Club, Equality Utah, and Utah Education Association. In November 2010, I was honored to be elected as Senate Minority Leader by my Democratic colleagues.

My passion for public service led me to serve as a member of the Salt Lake City Board of Adjustment, a board member of University of Utah Young Alumni Board, and later Alumni Board of the U of U; a board member of the Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Utah Minority Bar Association, where I became president in 2003. I have been active in the American Bar Association, the National Association of Latino Elected & Appointed Officials (NALEO); and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC).

For Utah Democrats I have served on the State Democratic Executive Committee, was the volunteer attorney in my early career; advised and assisted many candidates as they ran for office; fundraised and donated to candidates and party building efforts; and proudly represented Utah as a delegate to DNC Conventions.

At the National level I was a campaign donor and bundler for President Obama and also had the pleasure to serve President Obama as a Member of the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars. I have also assisted and helped financially support and have given advice and counsel to many currently serving Congressional Members and Senators.

I am married with 2 children. I have always had an interest in helping ensure Utah is welcoming and inclusive and I am therefore spending more time doing diversity & inclusion consulting as well as legal work.  I continue to serve my community in various capacities, including on the Board of the Utah Hospital Association and the Institute for Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity, an organization affiliated with the American Hospital Association. I also currently serve as the Region 15 President of the Hispanic National Bar Association.

I welcome your comments, ideas and feedback as we continue to grow our Utah State Democratic Party and help get Democrats elected in Utah, to Congress and importantly this year, to the White House.

Go Democrats!
